Best Hotels in Madrid
Madrid doesn't sell itself the way Barcelona or Lisbon do. It's a city that rewards slow stays — late lunches in Chueca, an afternoon at the Prado, a midnight walk through Plaza Mayor when the day-trippers have gone. The right hotel here isn't about a rooftop with a sea view; it's about being able to step out the door and into the rhythm of a working European capital that happens to take pleasure very seriously.
For most travelers, that means staying within the triangle bounded by Retiro, Centro, and Salamanca — close enough to walk to the museums, the tapas streets, and a Real Madrid match if you're so inclined. Below is our shortlist: five-star landmarks, a refurbished grande dame, a smart mid-range option, and a boutique pick for travelers who want character over square footage.
The shortlist
Mandarin Oriental Ritz Madrid — Retiro
The Ritz reopened in 2021 after a top-to-bottom restoration by Mandarin Oriental, and it's now arguably the best hotel in the city. The Belle Époque shell — commissioned by Alfonso XIII in 1910 — is intact, but the rooms are quietly modern, the spa is genuinely good, and Deessa holds two Michelin stars. It sits directly across from the Prado, with the Thyssen and Reina Sofía a short walk away. If you're staying in Madrid once and want the full experience, this is the address.
Four Seasons Hotel Madrid — Centro
Opened in 2020 inside the Canalejas complex, the Four Seasons stitched together seven historic buildings into a single property a few minutes from Puerta del Sol. It's the most polished new-build luxury hotel in the city: a serious rooftop pool, Dani García's Spanish restaurant Dani Brasserie, and rooms that feel residential rather than corporate. Best for travelers who prioritize service consistency and want to be in the absolute center.
The Westin Palace Madrid — Cortes
The Palace is the Ritz's century-old rival, sitting on Plaza de las Cortes between the parliament and the museum mile. The famous stained-glass rotunda over La Rotonda lounge is still one of the great hotel spaces in Europe. Service is warm rather than starched, and the location is unbeatable for a museum-focused trip. Rooms vary — ask for one of the renovated categories.
Bless Hotel Madrid — Salamanca
Bless is the choice if you'd rather shop on Calle de Serrano than walk to the Prado. It's in the heart of Salamanca, Madrid's most polished neighborhood, with a rooftop pool, a strong cocktail program, and a younger, more design-forward feel than the grande dames. Good for couples and for travelers who treat the hotel as part of the entertainment.
Heritage Madrid — Salamanca
A Relais & Châteaux property from chef Iván Cerdeño and the team behind Hotel Orfila, Heritage opened in a restored 19th-century building on Calle de Diego de León. It's small, considered, and food-led — the kind of place where breakfast actually matters. If you want luxury without a lobby full of conference badges, this is the one.
NH Collection Madrid Suecia — Centro
A reliable upper mid-range pick a block from Gran Vía, in a 1950s building that once housed Hemingway. The rooftop bar, Hemisferio, has one of the better skyline views in the center, and rooms are clean-lined and quiet for the neighborhood. Good value if you don't need a spa or a pool and would rather put the savings into dinner.
Petit Palace Posada del Peine — Plaza Mayor
A boutique pick built into what is reportedly the oldest hotel building in Madrid, dating to 1610, half a block from Plaza Mayor. Rooms are compact and contemporary, with hydromassage showers and a free-bike loaner program. Best for solo travelers and couples who want to be inside the old city without paying five-star rates.
What we left off and why
A few hotels we considered and didn't include: the Rosewood Villa Magna is genuinely excellent and arguably belongs on any Madrid list, but at current rates it overlaps so heavily with the Mandarin and the Four Seasons that we'd rather send most travelers to one of those two for the location. URSO Hotel & Spa is lovely but sits in Chamberí, which is a longer walk from the museums than most first-time visitors want. We skipped the Hotel Riu Plaza España because, despite the Instagram-famous rooftop, the rooms and service don't match the price point. And we left out Only YOU Boutique properties — they're fine, but the brand is over-recommended online and doesn't outperform Bless or Heritage in the same price band.
How to book + IMPT advantages
Madrid pricing is volatile: ATP tournaments, Real Madrid home matches, ARCO art week, and the late-September shoulder all move rates by 30% or more. Book direct-cancellable rates 8–10 weeks out, then re-check two weeks before arrival.
