Eco-Resorts in Bali, Ubud

Ubud's eco-resort scene is older and more credible than most of Southeast Asia's, because it grew out of a working agricultural landscape — the UNESCO-listed Subak rice terraces, irrigated for a thousand years by a Hindu water-temple cooperative system that's still operational today. The best properties here aren't bolted onto that landscape; they're built into it, with permaculture gardens, bamboo architecture, and Balinese healers on staff rather than imported spa concepts.

Why this matters for a climate-conscious traveler

Bali's tourism footprint is heavy — water stress, plastic waste, and concrete villa sprawl are real problems on the south coast. Ubud's eco-resorts sit at the opposite end of that spectrum when they're done properly. Look for properties that source produce from on-site or neighbouring permaculture gardens, use bamboo (a rapidly renewable grass) as the primary structural material, run greywater systems, and partner with the local banjar (village council) on water-use agreements with surrounding subak farmers.

Certifications worth checking: EarthCheck (used by several Bali properties for water, energy and waste audits), Tri Hita Karana awards (a Bali-specific framework measuring harmony between people, nature and the divine), and Green Globe. Be sceptical of "eco" claims that amount to refillable shampoo bottles and a sign about reusing towels.

Where to stay

Bambu Indah, Sayan

Founded by John and Cynthia Hardy (of Green School Bali), Bambu Indah is a cluster of antique Javanese bridal houses and bamboo structures overlooking the Ayung River gorge. Natural swimming pools filtered by plants, breakfasts built around the on-site permaculture garden, and architecture that genuinely doesn't use steel or concrete where bamboo can do the job.

Fivelements Retreat Bali, Mambal

Riverside bamboo wellness retreat with a plant-based kitchen, Balinese healing rituals led by local practitioners, and a building program designed by Ibuku — the same studio behind much of the Green School campus. Tri Hita Karana Gold-awarded.

Hoshinoya Bali, Pejeng

The Japanese Hoshino group built this around a network of stone irrigation canals modelled on the subak system, with villas positioned so the water channels flow through the property rather than around it. Quiet, architecturally restrained, and integrated with the Pakerisan river valley landscape.

Como Shambhala Estate, Begawan

A wellness estate on a ridge above the Ayung River with resident Ayurvedic doctors, nutritionists and an on-site hydrology program. Source water comes from a spring on the property and is bottled in glass for guests rather than trucked in.

Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Kedewatan

Built around a working rice paddy that's actively farmed by villagers from neighbouring Kedewatan, with rice cycles visible from most villas. The larger Marriott group has sustainability reporting you can actually read, and Mandapa runs composting and herb-garden programs on-site.

Sayan ridge and Tegallalang alternatives

Smaller bamboo guesthouses around Sayan, Penestanan and the Tegallalang terraces — many run by Balinese families — often outperform the big names on actual footprint. If you want a similar bamboo-built ethos elsewhere, see our rainforest eco-resorts and biophilic design hotels guides.

What to look for and what to verify
